One event relates to have each team to submit a Visual FoxPro technical article by August 15, 2002. The article length will be between two and four pages. The articles will appear in an exclusive issue of the magazine on September 2002 for the tournament. The Universal Thread community will be able to post their votes between September 1 and 15, 2002.
But, the most exciting part of the tournament certainly relates to the speed contest in putting together one Visual FoxPro desktop application and one Visual FoxPro Internet application within a timeframe of 48 hours. Each team will only receive the specifications at midnight the day the delay will start. Those two events will regroup knowledge of each team from various aspects such as team work, framework advantages, RAD techniques, ability to develop a fast and reliable solution, and so on. Those applications will be judged from our panel of judges. Four judges will judge the Visual FoxPro desktop applications and four others judges will judge the Visual FoxPro Internet applications.
The final standings will be available on September 15, 2002. Members of the top two teams will be awarded some interesting prizes. Get your own team today and register before July 12, 2002. Get all the details at http://www.universalthread.com/VisualFoxPro/Tournament.asp.
COMCodebook 2.0 moves to the Universal Thread!
COMCodebook - the middle-tier framework written in Visual FoxPro has found a new home on the Universal Thread. As of today, COMCodebook support is now available from the Visual FoxPro forum where a special category has been created for it. The COMCodebook files are also available from our Downloads area. You can download the framework as well as instruction manuals, samples and articles.
COMCodebook has been tested with Visual FoxPro 6 Service Pack 5 and higher. It is compatible with a variety of backend databases such as SQL-Server or Oracle. It also runs in Microsoft Transaction Server (MTS) environments on NT 4.0 Systems and COM+ environments on Windows 2000 and higher. COMCodebook will work with both environments, but it is recommended that you use COM+ on Windows 2000 Server.
Newest enhancements to the framework include MSMQ support, hierarchical XML generation and parsing, and better exception handling. The step-by-step guide, "Developing Apps with COMCodebook.doc", has been updated with detailed information on these topics.
In this issue, you will find an excellent article written by Beth Massi on COMCodebook 2.0. Beth is involved in various facets of the COMCodebook product.
Mini-conferences: grab this idea!
On last May, RapoZine has realized in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, the first "VFP´s mini-conference in Brazil". This "mini-conference" was devoted to VFP and had sessions on VFP with XML, OOP, N-Tier, ASP.NET and Web Services, besides a keynote to teach people about the present and the future of Visual FoxPro, and lots of prizes for the attendees. Now, this mini-conference will be hold also other States of Brazil, like Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and hopefully Bahia. This is a very good example for those countries where people can't afford to pay for a DevCon. It's just a matter of gathering some regional speakers and attendees as well as doing the event. Everybody loved it! See more info on www.rapozine.com.br/evento.asp.
