These fields are not intended for storing binary data. They contain character data, but I believe that some records have a bit of trash in them. I imagine that tab or CRLF would not pose problems, or would it? My original intent was to find a way to minimally clean the data to prevent parsing problems, however the NOCPTRANS idea helped as far as it suppressed the error.
