It is most likely that the table is encrypted and that the original exe is able to access the file becuase it has the correct access method.
The most obvious choice for such encryption would be Cryptor from XiTech. Ask your friend if an XICR##.DLL file is in the exe folder where ## is a version number eg 50.
If this does not help then ReFox'ing the exe, if possible, would reveal the steps the exe uses to access the file.
