If I return a struct type object than I do I need to define this struct on both the web service and the using client type scenarios.

Tim,

You may wish to look into the WCF. Any book on it will tell you how to create services and there is a ton of information on security included. there are 3 good books on it by: Michele Bustamante, Juval Lowy, and Chris Bowen

http://www.amazon.com/Learning-WCF-Hands-Michele-Bustamante/dp/0596101627
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Programming-WCF-Services-Juval-Lowy/dp/0596526997
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_b?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=chris+bowen+wcf

I think you will be better served by learning WCF rather than wasting time on technology that has been replaced.
