I am looking for a reasonably secure way to encrypt strings as a basic registration mechanism for a reasonably cheap software... Does not have to be crack-proof, just a decent minimal protection!

The only constrain is "limited dependencies". Should run on all Windows version starting with XP upwards. Does not have to be pure fox code but lousy and moving MS system dependencies not really welcome (:

Any tip welcome. I have used different schemes in old days (90s) but I am quite new on the subject and definitely on cryptography expert.
