Marcia, one of the problems here is the definition of violence. About a year or two ago, Melissa Harris Perry made a point that people shouldn't be charged with "violent crimes" when they destroy property but don't harm anyone physically. Many (including myself) disagree with her, but that has become a position from some on the left.
