Two notes:

1. The amount of time you have spent on this has probably cost you significantly more than third party software and this is a good case in point in why it is cheaper to go the route of debugged and easy to use software than the roll your own. Not to mention you may come across servers that aren't fully compliant or that require higher levels of authentication. I just wanted to point that out.

2. As far as your email address goes, email servers require this format:

"Display Name" <email@address.com>

for the email address. 

i.e.

From = ["Display Name" <email@address.com>]
