Well Montreal in particular will do that to people. And at that time the city was still digging itself out (almost out by then) from financial woes caused by political problems. The people of the city never let that get them down though and they stayed friendly and vibrant through the whole ordeal. Now that it's "back" I bet the city is even more enticing.
