The current assumption is that crows killed the toads. Currently known is that it wasn't a virus or anything like that, even though some groups still believe that the nearby horse races are the culprit. The whole thing happend in the first week of April, but made it only recently onto CNN. Yesterday, the US Consul General asked our senate for more details, since there were lots of calls from worried US citizens this weekend. I weren't in the park at that time (it's on the other side of the city), so I can only repeat what our local press is writing.
