It does seem that many people have their favorite player, rather than analysing positions. Usually, this early on the strong supporters are do to the candidates positions, with the majority of the public not being interested until the general election. The combination of the first serious black and female candidates, combined with a contentious primary race has people backing their candidates personally, more than for their positions. I think the number of Hillary/Obama supporters who say they won't support the other in the general is a testament to this.
