Please keep me posted on the activist movements in the Republican party. Or the Democratic party, for that matter.

If you want to see activists, spend a weekend in Madison. (A great place to spend a weekend, or longer, in any case). God love them but some of these people make me look about as lefty as Barry Goldwater. They sleep on the sidewalk in "Walkerville" in protest. They hand out leaflets. They scrap with the police and are arrested. They knit quilts saying "This is what democracy looks like" and drape them over benches around Capitol Square. They put "Impeach Walker" bumper stickers on their cars, on their garages, on hand created signs in their yards.

One thing I have learned in this whole drama is that Wisconsin is in fact a font of conservatism as well as liberalism. If you tour the Capitol -- a magnificent building -- you would be hard pressed to miss the bust of Bob LaFollette. It is also the state that gave us Joe McCarthy. It is a boiling pot of conflicting passions that was due to erupt somehow. Scott Walker, who is a skilled politician, I'll give him that, pressed his thumb firmly to the pressure point.

PS: Famous political slogan from the Goldwater campaign: "In your heart you know he's right." Equally famous retort from the LBJ campaign: "In your guts you know he's nuts."
