For completeness I've included some discussion that occurred offline...

Hi, David.

The expression builder will only show you fields from cursors in the
report's DE. I always use the DE, so I checked with another MVP who
doesn't ship reports with tables in the DE. She makes a temporary table
from a SQL select statement that "creates" her report data. Then adds it
to the DE for purposes of designing the report. Finally, she removes the
table from the DE before shipping.

Please post these follow ups to the UT. I seem to be having better luck
today with my connection, but I'm just being lazy askinng you to do it ;-)
