If it is MSDE 2000 then I'll have to guess a little: do you have a .msi file instead in your MSDE directory? If it is so, the only solution I can think of is to change its parameters through a MSI table editor such as Orca (please bear in mind this is what I would try to do - I can't tell for sure if it works or not or if it's too far fetched).
