Save a copy of the BMP as a MSK file, you can just make the whole MSK black, which will make the BMP retain all it's original colors. If you make some area of the MSK white it will make the BMP mix colors with the background in that area.

But when people select strange color schemes for their computers, the buttons change color, and therefore the background of the picture does not match.
