I believe the answer is application dependent. If your application (ie Autodesk view) spawns itself when you click on a filename then there is not much you can do.

Usually things like this are done throu an OLE interface. You may wish to check and see if one exists. For example you can open multiple documents in Word or Excel using the predefined OLE interfaces without spawning copies of the app.
