  234. Happy Birthday to the Microsoft FoxPro and Visual FoxPro Development Team!!! I began using FoxPro shortly before Operations Desert Shield/Desert Storm while in a Navy SeaBee Reserve unit. Once Saddam rolled into Kuwait in early August of 1991, I was mobilized and stationed at Port Hueneme, California, where I began using FoxPro. Once returned to civilian life a year later, I used FoxPro heavily at Douglas Aircraft Company in Long Beach, California, for Logisitics purposes. The people for whom I developed software were amazed at the versatility of the product and its speed. I have been developing in FoxPro and Visual FoxPro ever since and love the product. After all the announcements, gift give-a-ways (they lost the business cards for the raffle so I had to through the freebies into the audience...) I was asked by the press what I though of the whole thing. I said that I thought they would do great things with FoxPro and that there was no way they were going to let it languish. The press didn't print my comments and instead printed all the comments from the pundits who said it would be tabled immediately. Here it is, 10 years later, significantly improved, with yet another version in the works. Thanks MS for proving me right and for doing all you have done!

In the last 10 years the improvements in robustness, usability, and relational dbms features have risen geometrically. It's hard to believe its been only 10 years... But I've been having so much fun it's hard to believe it has actuall been 10 years. 742. Thank you for the purchase by Microsoft of Fox Software. At the time of the purchase, I had already been using FoxBase/FoxPro for five years. One training class in dBase III Plus from UCLA Extension was all the developer training that I had for many years. It helped me to move from the world of financial analysis and accounting into the world of development and information systems. At one time, the entire Finance Department of a division of a large telecommunications/federal government contracting company where I worked was running on FoxPro applications that I had either designed, developed, or inherited from others. The development of Visual FoxPro with its OOP and database container was a tremendous step forward. If I can say so, it put VFP even or ahead of VB/Access and other competitive products for a while. It brought much greater knowledge and maturity in practice to the Fox development community. Now, enterprise systems have brought greater comprehensiveness and scale to the systems work that I do. Still, I received a tremendous education by using FoxPro/Visual FoxPro. I conquered many development challenges on my own and with ocassional help from the wonderful community of other Fox developers. Thank you for all that you have invested in the FoxPro product and FoxPro people over the years. It was a great support and help to the many individuals and organizations that had invested into the product ourselves. As a former visitor/member of the LA Fox User Group, thank you for putting Ken Levy into the position of product manager/executive, etc in order to provide great leadership for the future. Sincerely, Greg Griffith Colorado Springs, CO

  875. Thank you to the .NET designers for making it so VFP friendly.. it's wonderful to see some of the best-practice language constructs we knew and loved in VFP make it into the FCL. And thank you for continuing to improve VFPOLEDB... being able to call VFP-resident SP's from ASP.NET is very valuable. Now... how 'bout changing the product name.. simply to shed any lingering negativity about VFP's rank amongst tools. Call it Visual AccessPro or something like that... and while we're at it.. fix the 'effin ACCESS ADP problems.. or better yet... merge the 2 into 1 product! Robert S. Davis Chief Technical Officer UNICOM Woonsocket, RI

  885. I find and all us on the UT find this product works great and I feel its future is related to its learning curve versus .NET. Lots of businesses run on Fox data and dont care about programming, they just want to stay competitive. It is mature and has attracted many experts and has great books and websites. If the parent-child forms wizards were redone and enhanced to become well-commented examples of good O-O techniques closely integrated with a new tutorial book in the shipping box based upon well-iterated and accepted techniques culled from books like say the old Pinnacle Special Reports on the controls and from all the other resources and books, and well referenced, the curve would remain accessible for the many .NET programmers who want to maintain and enhance Fox apps or use a single simple tool to deliver .exes or use the best COM tool for data - VISUAL FOXPRO. In many enterprises at the front line these are the objectives - to get the programming done quick in a way that can be maintained and fixed and to get on with the business. Call us cheap, but VFP can be a cheap man's .NET on the desktop as well as integrating well with .NET on the enterprise.

  886. On that June 30th many worried the Microsoft purchase of FoxPro/FoxPlus was only to gain a few talented staff, a tactic of many companies during the initial growth of microcomputers. But the product was kept, and allowed to grow as the state-of-the-art improved. The benefit to Microsoft and we customers has been a credit to Microsoft?s managers for doing the right thing; thank you.

  917. I was a bit nervous at first. I recall the 92' Phoenix Developers Conference seeing the MS Army in their rugby shirts and being a bit nervous of a take over. It was soon clear that FoxPro would remain FoxPro and the talent would not be spoiled. We were given and object oriented language, and are able to bang out great apps for our clients and make bucks. Thank you- MS for not screwing a good thing. Special thanks on this occasion to Drew Speedie and Rick Strahl, who taught me the power of Frameworks.

  933. Throughout history, the fox has inspired people not only for its speed but also because of its property of being able to survive in tough environments. In the Middle Dutch tale 'Van den Vos Reynaerde' (1100 AD) the fox even manages to survive the death sentence spoken out by the mighty lion king himself. So the name of that butt kicking software we all love, that managed to survive all those years, couldn't have been chosen better and I'm fully convinced that VFP is here to stay.(I only hope that there is no parallelism between the lion king and Microsoft...)

1132. When you look back on the 10 years we have moved from single user DOS aps, to multi-user, from there to Windows 16 bit, then to Windows 32 bit where we moved from monolithic to two tier then to n-Tier DNA architecture. In addition there was also the web and dynamic programing. Through all those changes and advances FoxPro and Visual FoxPro was there, keeping pace if not setting it, and providing a single source solution to do all of the above. Each version of FoxPro has become more powerful and, without question, made the developer more productive. So, to Bill Gates, Microsoft, and the FoxPro development team congratulations on 10 years building the best OOP 4gl tool for Windows bar none. Let's hope for 10 more years together!
