A timer object will ensure the splash screen to be shown for a predetermined amount of time. I usually show my splash screen while all the application initialization code is running so that when the splash screen disapears the app is ready. The only bad thing about this is the splash screen will display for a shorter period of time on a fast computer compared to a slow computer.

Kinda depends on what your requirements are.
