We usually say "almost fell on my face" but its not very common anymore.

In Brazil, that expression has two meanings: one is for something like "I'm gonna punch that guy in his face - gonna break his face"... the other is the one you're looking for, which is sort of "I was really counting on something to happen, but it didn't". I think a good way of putting it would be "I've set my expectations too high", but I think one of our fellow Americans should be able to find a better way of putting it. :)
