Down in the south quite a few businesses close on Good Friday. Our offices were closed. It is known as the darkest holiday also. Since it represents the day that Jesus was crucified (9:00am 3rd hour of the day) and darkness covered the land (12:00 pm 6th hour of the day) and then the darkness left and Jesus died (3:00pm 9th hour of the day) I guess that is somewhat understandable.

>As a couple of people said, today is the Jewish festival (not a holy day) of Purim, based on the book of Esther. It's very late this year.
>
>Also as others said, it's Good Friday.

>This combination of Good Friday and Purim is fairly strange. As I understand it, Good Friday is the most solemn day in the Christian calendar. Purim, otoh, is a day of merriment and celebration.

>One of my students informed me that March 25 is a Greek national holiday, as well.
