You write "This client is running XP, but I can connect from another XP station. I will check if they have the same service pack."

I think, the user with another XP station (who can connect with SQL server) is in list from users who can access the server. Try this (you or the sysadmin):
insert this user on server from 'administrative tools->computer management->users->new user'
