I was told that straps on suitcases had to be removed and put inside as they can catch on equipment during processing. Usually the person checking in your baggage would take care of this, but if it's left up to the guys driving the little carts, who knows where it could end up.

I hadn't heard about the luggage thing but a friend tells me his bag and locks where broken when flying into new york and straps on the suitcase went missing. I'm happy with all the security they can muster as well.It just came as a suprise not having heard about it before.

I have found that some places don't make you take off sneakers - only hard shoes - while others make you take off any footwear. I've never had my laptop checked, just have to put it through the machine. Sometimes I have to remove my belt entirely, sometimes just open it, and sometimes it doesn't set off the alarms. Same belt. Different airlines, different states, different airports, different rules, etc.
