I wish they'd clarify in the UK. The govt keep saying you're allowed to use "reasonable force" on a burglar but won't say what that means: going upside his head with a baseball bat or getting him in an arm lock. Recently they said that no-one is likely to be prosecuted for battering the burglar, so long as you don't jump repeatedly on his unconscious head, but are you allowed to put him unconscious?

Seems the safest thing to do is wag a finger at him and ask him to leave, after a cup of tea.
