In the meantime, the screen saver has kicked in by now. When I come in in the morning and until I actually touch the mouse to see what's going on, only at that point will the code continue on that is VFP retakes control and continues wroking.

I've never done it, but I do know there is an API to shut the screen saver on and off. You could you a timer to occasionally move the mouse pointer a pixel. Since it is running overnight, the simplest solution would to be to disable the screen saver completely and just shut-off the monitor when you leave at night.
