I can recommend 2 books for ASP.NET development:

ASP.NET Unleashed, Second Edition by Stephen Walther
Programming ASP.NET, 2nd Edition by Jesse Liberty

I actually only read the 1st editions of these books. I was surprised to check Amazon.com and find that they weren't rated as highly as I would have thought (4 out of 5 stars). Also, I can't remember if they use Visual Studio .NET much. I think if you are going to use Visual Studio .NET, you may want to check and see if they use that in their examples.

If you are using Visual Basic .NET, I can also recommend Programming Microsoft Visual Basic .NET by Francesco Balena. It also covers WinForms and the language itself, so I don't think it's as in depth on ASP .NET, but it's a very good book.

So far as an IDE, I have only used Visual Studio .NET 2003. I really like it. Make sure you have a somewhat fast system with plenty of memory. I have 1 GB and it works well.

I use the Mere Mortals .NET framework and highly recommend it. Great documenation and support here on the UT.
