VFP can handle your tables, no problem, and it should be able to run most of your code as written. However, since you indicate that speed is a problem, you'll want to look at your indexes, and make sure all of your LOCATEs are fully optimized. As you get further into your rewrite, you may want to look at parameterized views, to speed things up a bit.
Basically, to do this correctly, you'll have to do almost as much rewriting in VFP as you would for the others. You do have the head start of not having to convert your data, and if you plan before you start writing, you might come up with a framework which you can use for your next project.
