I'm doing much the same kind of work...and I must say I'm very impressed with MySQL all around. It's very fast, easy to admin and back up, has a small footprint, is very well documented and well behaved. I run the windows version on my dev laptop, but the production server is Debian Linux. We're still running 4.1...I'm not a big fan of triggers, and it does enforce referential integrity.

We run linux stuff for most of what SBS does...and I'd like to make it the OS in my dev laptop, but there are a couple of things (VFP and Battlezone II) that are holding me back from completely dumping XP. I currently run the latest Ubuntu Linux under VMWare, and really like it...was a snap for even a puddinhead like me to get running.

Linux isn't quite as comfy as XP, but I am so sick of wondering if my laptop is going to come back up after one of those "install updates and shutdown" episodes. I imagine Linux will get as bloated and sloppy as XP eventually, but for now its pretty svelte and sexy.

>Im sure, you will not abandon VFP over PHP/mySql with regards to desktop or client/server(LAN) application development, unless you find it not profitable. To me, I found it still better. I currently use PERL and MYSQL for web development, but for desktop and client/server apps, still prefer using VFP. I started building an app in VFP and mySQL as its backend database, and plans to use a mix of perl/php code scripts to access it remotely over the web.
