>>This is excellent news as I am looking forward to adding SQL Express to one of my VFP apps this fall. I am working with the public beta (3?) now.

>What are you enthused about with SQL Server 2005 Express with VFP over what you can currently do with MSDE with VFP? List a few things, I'ld like to know so I can cross check what we will be highlighting in upcoming conferences and content online. So if you were to do a talk at a VFP user group showing VFP 9.0 using SQL Server 2005 Express as the data store, what would you highlight and demo?

  • No throttling. This was a non-starter for me in the prior versions because our transaction rate may have been relatively low, but the number of concurrent connections could be "high" relative to MSDE. So this scared be off from even trying it. With Express, database security/integrity now surpasses the now defunct "throttling" factor.
  • Easier to install, the UI is easy and fairly straightforward. The version on the VFP CDs was a royal pain to install. More times than I care to count the install progress bar would get down to a few seconds then reverse itself regardless of what parameters I passed on the command line. Command line installs? Not for my customers.
  • I have not tried the silent mode install, but I look forward to that if it works as advertised.
  • Downloadable scripts to create the Pubs and Northwind test databases
  • Add-on Express Manager
  • Though none of my DBs have ever approached the previous limit of 2GB, just knowing the limit is now 4GB is comforting.
