If you're talking about SQL Server, then all you need is the SQL Server client and the SQL ODBC driver - both of which will be installed when you install the SQL Server client. You need a client access license for SQL Server for each client that connects to the SQL Server. If the SQL Server is using per client licensing you may already have the necessary licenses.
