Hi Al. Although I didnt have the problem myself I wanted to say thanks anyway for taking the time to post such a detailed solution.
>Applying last week's Windows Critical Updates caused my computer to consistently crash with a BSOD: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA. If this has happened to you the following may allow you to get your system working again:
>
>1. Temporarily disconnect all IDE devices (optical drive(s), hard drive(s)) except your system boot hard drive.
>2. Your computer should now boot.
>3. Go to Control Panels...Add/Remove Programs.
>4. Uninstall "Windows Installer 3.1" (if present, this depends on the culprit below). Choose to NOT restart after this uninstallation.
>5. Uninstall "Windows Hotfix KB890859". Choose to NOT restart after this uninstallation.
>6. Manually shut your computer down (rather than restart).
>7. Reconnect your IDE devices.
>8. Your computer should now restart properly with all your IDE devices connected.

>This is the first time I've encountered a Windows Critical Update that broke any computer I've ever worked with, whether my own or a client's. It took me quite a while to troubleshoot it so I thought I'd post this info here. I've posted a bug report to MS.
