Unless you are in a situation like mine where the IT department has 'ping' blocked. I can only ping our proxy server, or localhost. Mike's code (which I believe uses 'ping' underneath somewhere) always returns false if I test on an external IP.

Direct pinging simply times out.

>Jim, I think the corect solution would be to do ping on an external ip first. If that is positive then you are connected. Trouble is all these options seems to fire up the auto dialler if you are not connected.

>>FWIW, Mike's API call says I am not connected - yet here I am ;-) Also, InternetCheckConnection in the same DLL says I use a modem to connect. No modem, just a configured VPN connection (not used for the Internet). I'm behind a transparent proxy server, with no client software or setup needed.

>>>Jos, Thanks. The IE options apparently have no effect on this... VFP9 attempts to connect to the internet so it can support the Task Pane Manager and it's internet links. In my experience, it will seek a connection regardless of the IE options settings, so I thought there might be a program command to do the same.
