On the desktop, right-click on the "Internet Explorer" option.
From the context menu, left-click on "Properties".
Go to the "Programs" tab.
Click on the "Add-ons" button at the bottom of the page.
A list of all installed add-ons will be presented. One or more of them will be the add-ons (so-called "browser helper objects"). You can disable them selectively until your problems go away. Unwanted Favourites you may have to delete yourself.
If you're not using Windows XP, BHODemon does much the same thing as above:
