I think because you care about XML security but DBFs are much more insecure, but it
seems you perceive it as a more mature technology. I just want to point that XML is not specifically insecure because it is a standard tht didn't had any security implication in itself. You can work very securely with XML by sending it trough HTTPS, etc. Also, XML is not something Microsoft invented or defined. It is a consortium-based standard. Microsoft, in this case, is workin in the consortium to add security and other things to complementary technologies like Web Services. From a technology perspective, they are mostly done, but the standarization process is still going on, and it's not simple.
Aside all that. I agree 100% with your statement about you not needing to learn .NET now because VFP suits your needs. Just take in mind that some other people's position or interest could be different.
