Airbus jumbo jet completes maiden flight
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Big News Network.com Wednesday 27th April, 2005 (UPI)

European jetmaker Airbus SAS completed its first test flight Wednesday of its A380, the world's largest passenger plane.

The four-hour trip included a crew of six and about 20 tons of test equipment aboard the two-story aircraft that can hold 840 passengers, the BBC reported.

Most of the tests were carried out at 10,000 feet as the plane flew over the Bay of Biscay and over ground within 100 miles of Toulouse, France.

Airbus now plans more than a year of flight-testing and certification-program work before the world's largest passenger plane, which cost nearly $2 billion more than the originally estimated $14 billion to develop, enters commercial service.

The share price of European Aeronautic, Defense & Space Co., which holds an 80 percent stake in Airbus, had fallen more than 2 percent by mid-afternoon Wednesday.
