I've always thought the simplest approach to crippling a software application is to disable the printing capabilities. Does not really do anything, and for the most part, this is the most used feature in an application.
IMHO, you would be signing your own death warrant as a programmer if you tried to destroy a users data. If word spread about it, you might as well not try to write another application.
