I don't have VFP7 or VFP8, but if I run the query in VFP6 with your suggestion, I get the opposite. When I have an index on EMPTY(field2) in TABA, I get the NULLs in the result of the WHERE EMPTY() query, but not in the WHERE NOT EMPTY() query. That's the exact opposite of the VFP9 behavior.
