The story behind the name goes like this. There was/is a character in the WWF/WWE called "the Rock" (real name Dwayne Johnson). He always refers to himself in the third person, "The Rock says...".

My wife's given name is Michalene, but she goes by Mickey. When I think she gets a little overbearing, I refer to her as "the Mick".
