I misread your message at first, and didn't notice that you wanted to write to a file, rather than the printer.
I only use the ??? command to send output to the printer. To write to file, I would just use the ? and ?? commands, or perhaps LLFF.
For printing in text-mode, I create a file, which I can then preview in a text editor or browser, or send to the printer.
