IMO, SVG is the way to go.

SVG is plain text (XML) and its relatively easy to understand how to create the basic shapes and build pretty graphics and charts on the fly.

The Adobe SVG viewer plugin is 'correct' but can be slow for larger SVG files. There is a new competitor in this area, they are supposed to lauch a viewer (beta) this summer with an impressive set of features. See http://www.gosvg.net/ for the full story.
