Yes, OWC is ideal for this across the web and does not require any plug-in on the client browser side. It basically has taken Excel and made it into a multi-threaded web application with a few limitations. Rick has an article and free class for it in his white papers. The free download from Microsoft is here:

However, if you wanted to do more with it, you could use some ActiveX plugins. For example, for drill-down capability...
