You may want to start with Visual Modeler. It's basically Rational Rose Lite. If you like it and want to go further (use cases, object models, etc.), you should look into Rational. I've heard that Rose '98 is buggy, but I would supsect that Rational will address that soon.

Can't help you with your specific question. Maybe it's an intentional limitation of the evaluation copy.
