Which COM object are you running? On what line of code do you get the error? Have you checked with the vendor of the COM object if this is a known issue?

The error could indicate an illegal value in some registry setting for the control that somehow got in there. In this case, you can use REGMON from http://www.sysinternals.com to find which registry key the application is reading. Than compare the value of the non-working machine with one of a working machine.
