The other direction would be an encouragement to expand a skill base, right? I'd much rather hear a developer err on that side. Then, like you said, for some reason things start to get personal.
I've seen comments to the effect of "You don't see VFPers going into a .NET forum and telling them that VFP is better than .NET". Here's my take on that:
1) This is a certainly a true statement, but I'll be a nickel that the ones that have said this have not spent much time in a .NET forum. If I lose the nickel, oh well. :)
2) Someone going forward to a new technology forum is not the same as someone going to the forum they are already a part of. If someone is already a VFP developer, and expands to .NET, it is only natural that they still are a part of the VFP community. It is also natural for them to want to share with those in the community what they are learning new. Really, I'd like to see some more "way to go" and "great for you, glad to hear you are doing new stuff" comments. And not sarcastic, as in "glad your learning (but go away!)", comments.
For example, I'm a musician. There are some friends I have that will push me to learn new things musically. And they are passionate about what they do musically. I get more out of that interaction than I do with those who don't really care to move forward in their musicianship. (That doesn't mean that I always am actually motivated enough to move forward myself).
Just some thoughts.
