I haven't figured out any of the details, but many programs (eg. Windows Explorer) hook Windows Messages to be updated when any file in a given directory is changed. You might explore those messages to see which one you want.

Using VFP9, you can now bind a form's WHND to these directly, and specify a method to handle the event.
