I have managed to get my Query Analyzer messed up where I cannot compile stored procs on a SQL Server installed on the same machine (it's my development laptop). Here's the error message I get when I try to run a stored procedure containing a CREATE PROCEDURE statement:

Server: Msg 7404, Level 16, State 2, Procedure ClientAddEdit_pr, Line 117
The server could not load DCOM.

I get the same error when trying to use the T-SQL debugger within Query Analyzer. So I'm trying to fix DCOM error #7404, but there's little or nothing I can find on how to do it.

I have fiddled with DCOM config until I have run out of ideas. Does anyone know where there's a comprehensive list of DCOM dependencies to allow Query Analyzer to connect to a SQL Server? I have found nothing of the kind searching with Google and on MSDN. I have tried all the tips I could find, including using DCOM Config to grant permissions to the user whose account SQL starts up in (mine). Nothing has worked so far.

This misconfiguration even survives an in-place re-install of Windows XP. I tried re-installing SQL Server 2k itself. When I uninstall, then reinstall SQL Server 2000 and then SP4, everything (DCOM) works fine until I reboot my computer. After that, the aforementioned error message reappears.
