Is there an easy workaround for having security for a MenuItem when the MenuItem's parent is a MainMenu and the MenuItem has no sub-items?

I see in mmMenuExtender that if the MenuItem is a "MenuPad" the MenuItem.Popup gets wired to the mmMenuExtender.OnClick(), where the security is handled. But if the MenuItem doesn't have any sub-items, .Popup never fires.
