I've had something similar happen in my dev environment.

If I type SET MESSAGE TO in the command window, my statusbar starts working again.

I've added that line to my application shutdown sequence as well so that when I'm working in my development environment, my statusbar gets 're-activated' when my application terminates.

Does this technique work for you?
