We once had to represent a mouth on a 80x24 screen - it was an app for dentists. We eventually put 32 squares of 2x2 characters in two "arcs" - where the middle four were two rows above/below the middle line, then the next three were one line off, and the outermost three were adjacent to the line. Took a long time to draw the line drawing characters, but in the end the dentists were very happy with that - the mouth was recognizable.
IOW, it only has to look like a duck... doesn't really have to be a duck.
