I have exactly the same architecture as yours in place for our multiuser VFP Database app.
What we do is to keep a local(where the program is) preference file(table) which stores the user's preferences as well as the location of your the database. So the first thing the program does is to find the database and load(open) it, if not found, give the user a GetDir() or GetFile() window to locate the database folder or the database then save it in the local preference file for future use.
