Before I open my mail, I use a free version of MailWasher and love it. It looks at the servers the mail comes from etc and does a great job of showing you what it thinks is spam and what is not. I see on their web site that they've quite a few improvements from the version I run, but the down side is that the free version is now only free for 30 days.
