Interestingly, as "Gridiron" appears to have derived from Rugby, the weird thing is that in Rugby you're absolutely not allowed to throw the ball forward of your own position, even accidentally (offence is called a "knock-on"), whereas Gridiron RELIES on this. I think I saw an old B&W film of the varsity player who first did this - can't remember his name - and engendered the modern game. It's like the boy at Rugby School in UK who first picked uop the ball and ran with it, whilst playing football, and invented Rugby Football.
